Ian Dawes On Cup Win

Shropshire Senior Cup victory for Town

Ian Dawes insists his youth team have plenty to work on despite them sending Shrewsbury Town into the final of the Shropshire Senior Cup on Tuesday night.

Goals from Niall Flint, Jordan Wilson and an own goal helped ten-man Town to a 3-2 win against Ellesmere Rangers at the Greenhous Meadow, with the side being made up entirely of the Under-18s squad.

Dawes said: "For these boys it's not just about developing technically and tactically, they've got to work on other aspects like how to manage a game of football, the focus and the psychological side of it.

"The positives were that, after going down to ten men (Niall Flint shown two yellow cards), we worked hard defensively and kept a solid unit, and defended well when Ellesmere were knocking long balls into our box.

"Credit to the lads because they played against adults. The two centre backs have competed well and won the majority of aerial balls.

"Going forward, this is development for the players.

"It was our third game at the Greenhous Meadow as a young group and it's great for them.

"The occasion is great because it teaches the lads about playing in front on the fans and on the pitch, and in front of the manager.

"It's a little bit of added pressure for them and they've got to learn how to deal with that pressure in the right way and control the psychological side of things both on and off the ball."
