FTDL Northern Cup win for development squad

FIRST-HALF goals from Scott Vernon and Aaron Wildig gave Shrewsbury Town's development squad a Final Third Development League - Northern Cup win at Stoke City on Tuesday afternoon.

The hosts went closest to taking the lead at their Clayton Wood Training Ground when Town goalkeeper Callum Burton tipped Joel Taylor's goal-bound drive onto his crossbar.

But Town took the lead just before the half-hour mark when striker Scott Vernon chested a long ball forward down on the edge of the Stoke penalty area before firing a low drive into the near corner.

The Shrews then doubled their lead ten minutes before half-time as Vernon turned provider by finding Aaron Wildig, who had burst forward into the penalty area, before the latter fired the ball into the Potters' net.

Town introduced youth team players Jeff Watkins, Josh Ginnelly and Kaiman Anderson off the bench in the second half as the visitors held on for a clean sheet and the victory.
