Girls win U13 Girls Cup and through to Nationals
Thomas Telford School, representing Shrewsbury Town, impressively swept aside all comers to be crowned area winners in the Football League under-13 Girls Cup this week.
They made home advantage count with Monday's area finals played on the Power League pitches right next to the Greenhous Meadow.
The Thomas Telford girls will now go forward to represent Shrewsbury Town in the next round of the national competition at Leeds United on February 10 as they remain on course for a dream Wembley appearance.
"It was a fantastic team performance and I think we now have a real chance of getting to Wembley," said Lee Pugh, senior community officer at Shrewsbury Town.
"Well done to Thomas Telford and good luck in the next round at Leeds next month."
Lee added: "We were up against Football League clubs from across the Midlands on Monday as nine other teams travelled to the Meadow.
"We were hoping that being the hosts may give us some small advantage."
Thomas Telford, as Shrewsbury Town's representatives, were up against Birmingham City, Burton Albion, Crewe Alexandra and Port Vale in the group stages.
The local girls were outstanding, scoring 11 goals and conceding none, as they progressed with a 100 per cent record.
That set up a semi final against Leicester City, an exciting game which Shrewsbury won 3-2.
Tranmere Rovers, 4-0 conquerors of Birmingham City in the other semi, lay in wait in the final with the Shrewsbury side having to show plenty of spirit.
Tranmere raced into a 2-0 lead but a rousing fightback capped by a late equaliser saw it end 2-2 with penalties required to determine the winners.
It was 3-3 after the first six penalties so it went to sudden death. Shrewsbury then went 7-6 up before Tranmere missed to leave delighted Shrewsbury as area winners.
