Boss pleased with start to pre-season training

Training is in full swing and Gaffer is happy with response

Micky Mellon is pleased how his new-look Shrewsbury Town squad have quickly settled into the demands of pre-season training.

The players reported to the Greenhous Meadow after their summer break for a fitness session on Saturday.

They had a double training session yesterday and it's the same today as the coaching staff build up the base level of fitness.

The manager said: "It's started off really well. Everybody knows the purpose of pre-season and I think the lads appreciate when it's well organised. We're slowly building the fitness levels."

Micky added he was enjoying working with the players as they all get to know each other with many of the squad newcomers to the club.

He said: "It's fantastic to have the players back and in and around the building, getting the training done and getting all the players acquainted with each other because it's a nice time to get cracking again.

"The environment is good and everybody seems to be enjoying being here. I was determined I was going to create that type of place.

"The staff here have been fantastic in helping me create that so we're all enjoying being here and we'll just keep adding to the fitness levels.

"We had a fitness testing session on Saturday which will help us to gauge how much the training's impacted on the players. We trained twice yesterday and have two sessions again today.

"We're mindful of not overloading the players but to keep chipping away at adding to the fitness levels.

"They've looked after themselves, you can see that, and they've come back wanting to hit the ground running which is great because the quicker we can get to the levels we believe we need to get to then the  quicker we can start getting the footballs out and start doing some real footballing work.

"At the moment we have got the footballs out but it's just in between the running sessions to get them back reacquainted with the football again."

Town play their opening pre-season friendly against Chesterfield at the Greenhous Meadow a week on Saturday, July 12.

Premier League West Bromwich Albion will then visit on Tuesday, July 15.
