Young defender added to Micky Mellon's new look squad
Shrewsbury Town manager Micky Mellon has strengthened his defensive options by signing Cameron Gayle on a two year deal.
The former West Bromwich Albion defender already knows the Greenhous Meadow well following loan spells with Shrewsbury in each of the last two seasons.
Cameron, 21, who can play anywhere in the back four, joined Shrewsbury on trial earlier in pre-season and has impressed Micky enough to be offered a contract.
The Birmingham-born defender played 21 games for Shrewsbury during his two loan spells with most of his appearances coming at right back.
His only first team appearance for West Brom was as a substitute against Newport County in the Capital One Cup early last season.
Cameron was a reserve team regular at The Hawthorns before being released by the Premier League club at the end of last season.
Micky Mellon has been keeping an eye on Cameron in training and has been impressed with what he’s seen and pleased that Cam has agreed to join.
“I’m delighted to get Cameron on board, he’s a terrific young defender who can cover a number of positions across the back four but especially in both full-back positions”, said Micky.
“He’s a terrific athlete who has come from such a good club as West Brom so he has been schooled in the right way and is the type of player we want at the club.
“There are options all over the squad but what I didn’t want to do was to pull people out of their preferred position like we had to do last year with Woodsy.
“We’ve now got right-backs who are right-backs and I like Jermaine Grandison in that position as well.
“Cameron is the right age, a good footballer, an all round good guy and I’m excited about having another huge potential player in the building.”
