Woods: We gave good account

16 July 2014

Midfielder pleased with Town's performance against West Brom

Midfielder Ryan Woods believes Shrewsbury Town made a good impression in the friendly against West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday night – despite the defeat.

Town were beaten 2-1 by their Premier League opposition but Micky Mellon’s side showed spirit to force a close encounter with the Baggies.

And Woods feels the pre-season workout will be important for the Club ahead of the 2014/15 season.

“It’s nice that West Brom came to give us a game,” said Woods.

“I think we showed a really good account of ourselves.

“In the season we’re going to be looking to make other teams work hard without the ball, but it was good for our fitness in pre-season this game and we always expected them to have a lot of the ball.

“That said, we gave it a really good go and there wasn’t much difference between the teams.”

Tuesday gave Micky the chance to use the full depth of his squad, and Woods is hoping to play a big part in the manager’s plans for the new season.

“I think we’re going to have a very good team here this year which will play some attractive football,” said Woods.

“We want to keep pushing on now and see where it takes us.

“It’s a big season for me. I’m going to be looking to play as much as I can but that’s down to me, and I’ve got to make sure the gaffer picks me as much as he can.”

Woods is also looking forward to another pre-season test in the friendly at home to Championship side Watford on July 19.

He said: “They’ll be a good footballing side otherwise they wouldn’t be playing in the Championship.

“It will be another test to see where we are and it will help us to prepare for the season.”
