Shrewsbury Town manager Micky Mellon might be a proud Scot but he hopes England can make an impact at the World Cup Finals which kick off in Brazil on Thursday night.

England, with former Shrewsbury Town goalkeeper Joe Hart established as No 1, begin their campaign against Italy on Saturday night.

Micky said: "Hopefully they will do very well because it's important for the country and for the football in this country that we have a national team that represents us very well.

"I've lived in England since I was 16 and there's no better thing than when England are doing well as a football team. The whole nation gets behind them and it's a fantastic time.

"I've done all my coaching badges in England and for England to do well and represent the badges and qualifications I've got it can only enhance the value of them.

"My kids and my missus are mad England fans so it will be a very interesting time in the Mellon household."

As for who he thinks will emerge as world champions on July 13, Micky said: "Because of the conditions it's always going to be difficult for the European teams.

"But I think probably up there with Spain you would have to say Brazil and probably Argentina because of the quality and that sort of environment - but I'm sure that Scotland will referee it very well like they normally do!

"We'll take our part and we may be there longer than many other teams..."
