First-half Vernon goal not enough for ShrewsShrewsbury Town's reserve team slipped to a 3-1 defeat against Port Vale in the Final Third Development League's West Division game at the Greenhous Meadow on Tuesday afternoon.
Town's starting line-up featured the likes of Jordan Clark and Ashley Vincent while an entire youth team back four and goalkeeper was fielded.
The Shrews went ahead through Scott Vernon in the first half before Achille Campion hit a hat-trick for Vale.
The visitors settled quicker, with Byron Moore stinging the palms of Alex Ashton who pushed the ball behind for a corner.
From the corner Vale should have taken the lead when an out swinging cross found Moore who took a touch before firing against the post.
At the other end, Ashley Vincent collected the ball on the left before playing through Scott Vernon then rolled the ball into the bottom corner to give Town the lead.
However, Vale equalised soon after as Byron Moore dribbled along the edge of the box before firing in a low effort which Ashton parried.
The ball landed in the path of Achille Campion who headed home the equaliser.
Vale then took the lead on 50 minutes when Campion fired home from a Moore cross.
And it wasn’t long before the striker had his hat-trick, with the Frenchman curling a delicious free-kick over the wall but the under the cross bar just past the hour mark.
In the end, Town were unable to fight back and were beaten by the West Division leaders.
