Memorable Night For Town

29 October 2014

Town go close against Chelsea and now aim to build on the game

Town welcomed Premier League leaders Chelsea to Shrewsbury for the fourth round of the Capital One Cup.  In front of a 10,210 record Greenhous Meadow   crowd Town pushed Jose Mourinho’s side all the way and when Andy Mangan equalised in the 77th fans began to hope an upset could be on the cards.  In the end it was Chelsea who just edged things running out 2-1 winners and going into the draw for the semi-finals of the competition.

Now the dust has settled it’s time to reflect on a memorable night which will now be part of the clubs recent history.  Town manager Micky Mellon spoke with pride about his squad’s efforts and how they continued to give Chelsea right until the final whistle.  After the game Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho was full of praise for Town and the challenge they had proved for his players and wished the club well for the rest of the season.

Off the pitch Town’s commercial and hospitality teams were hard at work with record numbers of supporters taking up the matchday hospitality.  The addition of two marquees at the stadium meant that there were nearly 700 people dining and drinking before and after the match.

Town’s CEO Matt Williams said:”It was a great night for the club and I would like to thank every member of staff who have worked so hard to make the night such a memorable one.

“When Andy Mangan scored the whole stadium erupted and that was a very special moment to be part of.

“It has shown that the support for these big games is out there and what we hope is that they have seen the type of football Micky’s team is playing and will come back and watch us again soon.

“The game has shown that the club is beginning to evolve and we will always look at how to make the matchday experience for supporters a more enjoyable one.”

Shrewsbury Town are back in action at the Greenhous Meadow on Saturday 15th November against Mansfield and on Saturday 29th November Burton Albion.  Tickets are available from the ticket office at the Greenhous Meadow or online at www.shrewsshop.com .  Flexi tickets are available which will save you money on five matchday tickets.
