Micky Hopes Josh Ginnelly Will Stay

10 April 2015

Gaffer speaks about speculation on youngster

Stories have recently appeared in the press linking second year scholar Josh Ginnelly with a number of clubs. 18 year old Ginnelly has progressed through the youth ranks at Town and was recently offered a professional contract with the club for next season.  Despite still being in the final year of his scholarship he made his debut in Town’s 2-0 win at home to Luton Town at the end of August.

Town boss Micky Mellon was asked about these rumours in his pre-match ahead of this Saturday home game with Exeter City.

The gaffer said he was aware of these but he thinks that Josh is a young player who is still developing and the best place to achieve that is at Town.  Micky is hoping that Josh will sit down with him and the club and agree the contract which will see him stay here and continue his development:”Josh is a lad that we think an awful lot of, he has great promise and has worked with staff who have carefully and knowledgeably got him to the stage he is at.

“I am aware of the speculation, but one thing that I must say is the club from the chairman through Matt to myself has done everything we can to get the boy to sign.

“He has done pretty much everything along with his agent to try and avoid that contact to get the contract signed.

“I have to stick up for the club and say that there is not a lot more as a club we can do.

“I can only give my opinion and hard facts and say to people you can use Goldson and Woods as examples of lads who could have gone last year.

“I said to them, like I have to young Josh, it’s too early.  He’s got development that he has to do and he can do it here in a first team environment under a manager who knows him inside out.

“He has a clear development pathway for him at a club who cares about him and wants to work hard with him so he can realise that fantastic potential.

“It you ask Woods and Goldson if they think they are better players than they were last season then we all know the answer to that.

“Time will tell but we hope we can keep another of our terrific young players at this football club.”
