Town went in search of a consolation in the closing stages but were unable to breach a resolute Tranmere back line.

Tranmere started the second-half on the front foot and they doubled their advantage when Kirby curled a wonderful strike into the bottom right corner from 25 yards.

HALF-TIME: Shrewsbury Town 0-1 Tranmere Rovers

Town came close to pulling level just before the break when Niall Flint saw a curling strike from 20-yards tipped around the post.

The midfielder picked up the ball on the edge of the box and smashed a left-footed strike into the top corner and beyond the outstretched arms of 'keeper Shaun Rowley.

But just after the half-hour mark, the Whites took the lead following a fantastic strike Kirby.

Undeterred, Shrewsbury hit back with young midfielder Ethan Jones firing a shot from the edge of the box just past the post.

After an even opening, Tranmere had the game's first real chance on 15 minutes when Evan Gumbs headed wide from Ben Jago's corner.
