Gaffer's thoughts after home defeat to Chesterfield

Micky Mellon was left deflated after Shrewsbury Town slumped to a home defeat against Chesterfield:
“I didn’t see that performance coming. I take full responsibility because at the end of the day I pick the team and their performance wasn’t good enough. I will have to question my decision making after that showing. We looked devoid of ideas at times and lacked the intensity that we have had in recent games. I just couldn’t get a spark from the lads that would get us going. I don’t want to make any excuses because people pay good money to watch us play and we certainly didn’t pay the fans back this evening.”

The Scotsman felt his side were lucky even to be in the contest after the first half:
“At half time we were lucky still to be in the game, we spoke about that in the dressing room but we couldn’t get going in the second half and they got the early goal that gave them control. Both the goals were poor which was very uncharacteristic of us and that is obviously disappointing.”

Mellon is desperate to get his side back on the training pitch and back in form:
“We did manage to pull one back but apart from that it was a very poor evening. We will all stick together and rebuild together and we need to go back to training giving 100% to improve. After a performance like that the best thing is to get back to basics in training and work as hard as possible to improve on tonight.”
