FULL-TIME: Shrewsbury Town 3-1 Wrexham
McKnight then scored a decisive third as McAlinden pulled the ball back to the edge of the box to McKnight who drilled a low shot into the bottom left corner.
And a minute later, Shrewsbury went in front as McAlinden drove down the left and crossed low for the unmarked Barnett in the box who then first low first-time into the bottom right corner.
Town goalkeeper was forced into a superb stop on the hour mark on the hour-mark to beat away a powerful half-volley from Gray from over 25 yards out.
And McAlinden went even closer to a Town second as he rattled the crossbar with a thumping left-foot drive from just inside the box.
Matt Tootle also looked to catch Sharpe off his line from just inside the Wrexham half, but the effort was off target.
Akpa Akpro almost gave the Shrews, led by Ian Dawes and Danny Coyne, the lead four minutes after the break when he beat his man on the left before curling a low shot narrowly wide of the far post.

However, Town did find an equaliser in the 43rd minute when McAlinden crossed low from the right, looking for Barnett, and the 'keeper could only help it into the striker who had a tap in from ten yards.
At the other end, defender Sam Patterson drove forward from his right-back position, feinted past two players and forced a low save from Sharpe when entering the Wrexham box.
James Gray also saw a low strike fly whiskers wide for the Red Dragons.
And it was the visitors who took the lead in the 25th minute when Danny O'Brien fed Cofie to the inside right of the penalty area and the winger fired underneath the goalkeeper from the angle.
Striker Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro was then picked out unmarked at the far post from Mat Sadlers cross on the left, but the Frenchman could only glance his header wide.
On loan winger McAlinden looked to open the scoring with two efforts from long range in the opening 12 minutes - one flying over and the other being well held by Wrexham goalkeeper Liam Sharpe.
Defender Callum Grogan was the only non-professional in Shrewsbury's starting line-up as Town named a strong side.
FIRST HALF
The striker then fired home from close range from another McAlinden cross in the second half, and Darren McKnight sealed the victory for Town with 15 minutes to go by rifling into the bottom corner.
The Red Dragons took the lead through John Cofie in the first half but Barnett equalised with a tap in following Liam McAlinden's cross two minutes before the break.
Tyrone Barnett scored a brace as Shrewsbury Town beat Wrexham in the Final Third Development League - West Division on Tuesday afternoon.
