CST sessions set to launch from 20 January

Shrewsbury Town Community Sports Trust will launch Down’s syndrome football sessions from 20 January, 2015.

“We have identified a need for this provision within the county, with our dedicated Community Trust staff running an array of community-focused projects, and in this case for children and families living with Down’s syndrome.

“We are really looking forward to this session starting on 20 January.”
Aiden Wassell, the CST’s health and inclusion officer, said:

The Down’s Syndrome Association (DSA) has been a key partner in making this project work. The DSA is the only organisation in the UK solely dedicated to living successfully with Down’s Syndrome (DS) with an aim of helping people with Down’s syndrome live a full and rewarding life.

Approximately 85 per cent of people with Down’s syndrome attend mainstream school. Having the ability to train and play at a similar level increases their ability to reap all of the potential benefits.

While participants are learning physical skills, they are simultaneously increasing their own social and emotional abilities.

Through football, this project aims to create a multi-tier learning environment that will improve the participants’ overall physical, social and emotional health.

Sessions are in conjunction with DSActive. The essence of DSActive is to provide children and young people with Down’s syndrome the same benefits of being on a team as their able-bodied peers.

At the end of the four-week block every child who comes to the session will be entitled to a free match ticket to Shrewsbury Town’s home league match against AFC Wimbledon on Saturday 14 February.

. £20 with the first four-week block costing every Tuesday5.30-6.30pmThe sessions will take place at Shrewsbury Sports Village from
