Essential Guide to Burton Albion

2 January 2015

A look ahead to the trip to Burton Albion

Saturday 3rd January is the Shrews’ first game of the new season as they travel to the Pirelli Stadium to face Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s Burton Albion side.

Burton were founded in 1950 and entertain their fans at the Pirelli Stadium in front of up to almost 7,000 fans every week.

Former Chelsea and Leeds United striker Hasselbaink took over at the club late on in 2014 when Gary Rowett was appointed Birmingham City boss. The ship has been steadied and an impressive run of results but where blot on their copy sheet was the 1-0 home loss against The Shrews at the end of November.

Tickets

No tickets are available on the day and tickets must be bought in advance from the Greenhous Meadow >> Burton Tickets

Pre-Match Pub

The local police have suggested that Town fans use The Beech's on Derby Road for a pre-match pub, about 500 yards from the stadium

Player Connections

Very few players have represented both the Shrews and Albion in recent years with midfielder Lee Bell and defenders Ian Sharps and Shane Cansdell-Sherriff  three of the few.

Bell currently plays for Burton having come through the youth set up at Crewe Alexandra. It was there where he had a loan spell with the Shrews in 2003 but only made three league appearances. Two years later he would go on loan to Burton but would then stay at the club long term from 2012.

Previous Meetings

29th November 2014
Shrewsbury Town 1-0 Burton Albion

In what was Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s first league defeat in charge of Burton Albion, Shrewsbury Town walked away victorious. The pair of promotion contenders were very close on the day and it took a Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro strike eight minutes from time to settle this contest

10th March 2012
Shrewsbury Town 1-0 Burton Albion

The Shrews were also victorious in 2012 when the two teams met and by exactly the same score line. Ian Sharps netted the only goal of the Spring afternoon as the Shrews gained three more points.
