We continue our look at this seasons Sky Bet League 1 opponents
Colchester United avoided the drop by two points to ensure they would compete in Sky Bet League One for the eighth consecutive season. Here we take a closer look at the Essex based club.Name: Colchester United Football Club
Nickname: The U’s
Stadium: Colchester Community Stadium (Weston Homes Community Stadium)
Founded: 1937
Last season:
Colchester were undefeated in their last four games of the season as they battled against relegation. A 1-0 win at home to play-off winners Preston was enough to keep them up on the final day.
Crawley Town were the only club to concede more than Colchester as the U’s leaky defence let in 77 goals, six of these coming without reply in a thrashing by Chesterfield in April this year.
George Moncur was top scorer for the club, weighing in with eight league goals to go with the one FA cup goal he bagged.
The Gaffer:
Anthony Humes is the current boss of the club. Humes made a combined 329 appearances for Ipswich Town and Wrexham from 1985-1999.
The former defender returned to Ipswich as a youth coach in 2001 where he remained until 2009 before joining Colchester’s centre of excellence in the summer of 2009. He remained in this position until being appointed first team manager following Joe Dunne’s departure in September of last year.
Stadium:
The Colchester Community Stadium was opened in August 2008. It had a construction cost of £14 million. It is known as the Weston Homes Community Stadium for sponsorship reasons.
The ground has a capacity of 10,105.
Past Meetings:
Shrewsbury last met Colchester in the 2013/14 season in League One. The Shrews battled to a 1-1 stalemate at the Greenhous Meadow in October 2013 before being defeated 1-0 in Essex in March 2014.
