Manager Pleased To Earn Draw In The End
Micky Mellon was delighted with Shrewsbury Town's performance against Cardiff City as they secured a well-earned 2-2 draw late on against the Championship side.
However the gaffer was keen to ensure that the club don’t get carried away despite the positive result.
“We did well in both half’s which was great. I was pleased with how the team gelled so overall it was a very satisfying performance," said Micky.
"I think we deserved a goal earlier than the one we got. We hit the bar and the post so we certainly deserved the equalizer.
"Our fitness looked impressive as we were the team pushing for the winner at the end so that is very pleasing.
"We never want to lose no matter if it is a friendly or not. I am sure Cardiff will be challenging at the right end of the table next season so to perform as we did is a great benchmark for the season ahead.
"My lads looked like they were comfortable in the company of Cardiff which is good for us going into the season in League One. I know it is a cliché but I will not get carried away with the result. The lads looked fit but they will get even fitter and be even slicker and that is exciting for the club."
Mellon was relieved to get through the tie without any injuries and admits he is far from deciding his starting eleven for the opening day of the season against Millwall.
"We wanted to make sure we were tested this week. I wanted us to be under pressure and we got that today and looked good with it. It was nice to get out of the game without any injuries too.
“We have trained hard and we are seeing that pay off now. We have very good players here and we have added to that with the signings and there is really promising signs with all of them.
"I know they are going to get even better as they bond more with the group. It is too early to talk about having a starting eleven in mind yet but I said to the lads before the game to make sure they give me no option but to play them in the coming games and they have done that.
"It will give me some sleepless nights deciding but that is what I want from the group. It was fantastic that we had two strikers getting on the scoresheet as well."
