"Darren's a Northern Ireland under-21 international and a lad that I knew from Barnsley," said Micky.

"He's been with us a number of times during the season in the reserves and me and my staff have been massively impressed with him and believe he's a lad of great promise, and we absolutely think he's going to get better and better.

"He's a midfield player and a very technically gifted lad who has a great range of passing and will be a really exciting addition to the group. To work with a young player like that and try to move him forwards will be a great challenge for the club.

"I worked with him at Barnsley and he was comfortably one of the best young players in the area and in youth football. He was always someone who was highly-regarded by all clubs.

"He fits the profile of players that we want to bring in underneath the first team. We're hoping that he'll push on, bridge that gap and get into the first team quickly.

"He's at a great age and I was very suprised that he left Barnsley."

Micky has worked with McKnight at Barnsley in the past and felt he was ready to sign professional terms with Town after impressing on trial.

19-year-old midfielder McKnight, who signed a 12-month contract at the Greenhous Meadow (the Club have the option on a second year), joins Mat Sadler, Martin Woods, Abu Ogogo and Shaun Whalley in signing for the Shrews this summer.

Manager Micky Mellon believes Darren McKnight is an 'exciting' signing for Shrewsbury Town.
