2015 sees Town beat Stevenage and then Newport to take Town top

January

As the New Year dawned, Shrewsbury were sitting top of League Two and could boast a five-game unbeaten run in the league. That good form, though, was not enough to stop them falling to defeat in their first game of 2015 – a 1-0 loss at Burton that saw Town drop to third place.

A Thursday night trip to Luton Town followed for a game that was broadcast live on Sky. Town were not at their best for their big TV date, but they battled hard to keep the Hatters at bay and record a 0-0 draw.

A 3-0 win over Hartlepool was then followed by a thrilling 3-2 victory over Stevenage, whose manager Graeme Westley had sparked some animosity in the week leading up to the game with some less-than-charitable comments about Micky Mellon’s side. Those comments ensured a raucous atmosphere, and the match lived up to the hype as the sides shared four first half goals before James Collins netted an 88th minute winner.

Town then headed to Newport County for the last game of the month, where a Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro goal was enough to seal a third win in a row and lift the Shropshire side back to the top of the table.
