Only the one game, a defeat but Town are promoted
MayShrewsbury welcomed Plymouth to the Greenhous Meadow for the last game of the season and – despite having already sealed promotion – they still had plenty to play for. Town knew a win, combined with Burton dropping points at Cambridge, would see them crowned as champions.
A crowd of more than 9,000 packed the stands to see if they could do it, but this was not to be Shrewsbury’s day. Instead Plymouth, who had already all-but secured a play-off spot, scored two first half goals to inflict only a second home league defeat of the season on the Shropshire side. Burton’s 4-2 win at Cambridge made the result academic, and Town were able to enjoy their end of season celebrations.
A runners-up trophy was presented on the pitch before the players enjoyed a lap of honour to say thank you to the fans.
It has certainly been a season to remember – and now we all look forward to the League One campaign with renewed excitement and enthusiasm. Bring it on!
