Some tough away trips but Capital One success continues
September
Town still had a pleasant distraction care of the Capital One Cup, and their good form in that competition continued with a 1-0 win over Championship big guns Norwich City, to set up a clash with Chelsea in the last 16.
Fortunately, Town’s rock-solid home form was maintained – and a win against Carlisle and a 0-0 draw with Newport County ensured they finished the month still in contention, lying in seventh place and seven points off leaders Burton. With Wycombe and Bury now climbing to second and third, the promotion race was already starting to take shape.
Shrewsbury’s seven-game unbeaten start to the season was halted with a 1-0 defeat at Preston North End in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy. That signalled the start of a tough run of away games, with defeats at Hartlepool, Stevenage and Southend following.
