The season kicks-off away to AFC Wimbledon

August

The Capital One Cup was also a feature in August – Town defeating Blackpool 1-0 thanks to a Scott Vernon goal before a famous win at Leicester City’s King Power Stadium. Andy Mangan’s sensational free-kick secured not only a first ever win away to Premier League opposition, but a first ever competitive win away to any side from a division above Shrewsbury.

But it was Town’s home form that shone in the opening month, with wins over Tranmere, Accrington Stanley and Luton ensuring they would finish the month in fourth place. Burton were the early leaders on goal difference from Cheltenham Town – whose early form gave no hint as to the collapse that would eventually see them drop out of the Football League.

Two James Collins goals heralded the dawn of a new era as Shrewsbury launched their League Two campaign with a 2-2 draw away to AFC Wimbledon.
