"I've got the Under-21s European Qualifiers coming up in September so I'm looking forward to that," he said.

"It helps massively because you're going into a more competitive environment for international places because you're playing with players that are in a league higher than you, so obviously you have to raise your game that bit more."

McKnight has also been involved with Northern Ireland as a youth international and is looking forward to the Under-21s European Qualifiers in September.
"I know the gaffer well from when he was at Barnsley," said McKnight.

"I got released there and I was able to get in contact with him and he offered me the chance come down.

"I know what he's about and what he expects from me as a player and what he wants from the team, and I feel I fit that mould.

"I'm only young but I'm still going to push myself and see how far I can get this year and see where it takes me."

McKnight has worked with manager Micky Mellon in the past from when the pair were at Oakwell in the past and is looking forward to working with the Scot once again. "It's a club that I've been with over the past few months on trial and I'm just happy to get things done.

"I was very happy (with how the trial period went). I thought I played well in the couple of games and managed to get a goal with a free-kick for the reserves, and training with the squad, it was a great atmosphere to be in at the end of the season.

"Looking at the team last year and how positive everything was, it's a great environment for me to go into and challenge myself.

"I'd describe myself as a defensive-minded midfield player who gets on the ball and gets stuff happening and comes up with the occasional goal as well.

"I'm going to Shrewsbury to see how well I can push and get as many games as I can."

"I'm absolutely delighted to come to Shrewsbury," said McKnight.

And McKnight, a Northern Ireland Youth international who has been on trial with Town, is now looking forward to the challenge ahead at Greenhous Meadow.

The 19-year-old, who has previously played for Barnsley, has put pen to paper on a 12-month contract (the Club have the option on a second year).

Shrewsbury Town are delighted to announce the signing of young midfielder Darren McKnight.
