SIGNING: Matt Tootle

Defender Leaves Crewe To Join Shrewsbury Town

"I played probably over a hundred games at left back at the start of my career and the same at right," said Tootle.

"I'm predominantly more right footed than left footed but I do enjoy playing left back and I can go into midfield when needed as well."

And Tootle admits he is happy to play in any position having played at both full-back in midfield with Crewe.
"I know Mark (Ellis) as I spent two years with him at Crewe," said Tootle.

"He's a good lad and it will be nice to already know someone when I go in next week.

"Crewe are club very close to my heart and I've not got enough good words to say about them, but I think my time had come as I had been there since I was about eight (years old).

"I believe it was the right time to go and I'm now looking forward to a new challenge.

"Hopefully I can bring all of my experience to the table (at Shrewsbury)."

Tootle will link up with his new team mates for pre-season training later this month and will helped having played with fellow defender Mark Ellis in the past.

"It was an easy decision when I found out Shrewsbury were interested," Tootle told shrewsburytown.com.

"I had a bit of other interest but it was easy in the end when I knew Shrewsbury were involved.

"When I was promoted at Crewe we were on a roll, and from what Micky (Mellon) and Mike (Jackson) have done with Shrewsbury last season I think it will carry on here too.

"The way the Club has been doing it's business made me realise that we're going to do well this season.

"They said upto now that we've signed four captains, if you like, and I think it's a good idea, you try and get as many characters in your team as possible.

"I'm now looking forward to playing in a team that has got lots of experience and hopefully it's a successful period for me."

He is now looking forward to a new challenge at Shrewsbury and was impressed with the way Town went about signing him.

Tootle, who plays predominantly at full-back, progressed through the youth system at the Alex and went to make over 200 appearances for the club.

The 24-year-old opted to move to Greenhous Meadow following the end of his contract at Sky Bet League 1 side Crewe Alexandra.

Shrewsbury Town are delighted to confirm the signing of defender Matt Tootle on a two-year deal.
