And with just a minute to play, Wigan made it four with Mckay squaring the ball to Tim Chow for a simple finish.

Wigan's Joey Johnson then had a goal disallowed for offside.

The second half started in cagey fashion with no team creating any clear-cut chances until Mark Halstead was forced into a smart save to deny McKay on the hour.

James Caton saw a strike beaten away by Nicholls with the keeper then blocking two Josh Ginnelly efforts from close range.

Buoyed by the move, Town continued to press and they should have pulled a goal back just before the break.

Shrewsbury finally sprung to life on the half-hour mark when Alex Fletcher's header was comfortably caught by Nicholls.

This time Waghorn turned provider with his cross converted by Louis Robles.

Town were struggling to get out of their own half and Wigan made it 3-0 just before the 20-minute mark.

The home side soon doubled their advantage with Leon Barnett bundling the ball in following a corner.

And Town then fell behind seconds later when the lively Waghorn tapped home from Billy Mckay’s low cross.

In glorious sunshine at Christopher Park training groun, Wigan almost took the lead inside the opening five minutes when Waghorn thumped a low shot against the right post.

The youthful Town side were were up against a Latics side which included four professionals including striker Martyn Waghorn and ex-Shrews goalkeeper Lee Nicholls in their line-up.

Shrewsbury Town's development squad were beaten 4-0 at leaders Wigan Athletic in the Final Third Development League's West Division on Tuesday afternoon.
