And Richard Money's side nicked a point at the death as Kaikai found the empty net after a ball into the Town box was headed back across goal past Leutwiler.
Cambridge came back with a chance of their own and Slew slammed a shot over the bar after cutting inside to the edge of the box.
Demetriou then thought he had found a second for the Shrews but his fierce strike was deflected just the wrong side of the left post.
At the other end, Town were denied by the crossbar for a second time when Grant's inswinging free-kick from the right was tipped onto the woodwork by Dunn.
Leutwiler also had to get down to hold an effort from Simpson's replacement Kaikai.
With just over ten minutes to go, Cambridge's Robbie Simpson fired a free-kick onto the roof of the Town net before being substituted.
Defender Mickey Demetriou also pushed forward and created a clear opening for himself inside the box but the strike off his weaker right foot was well blocked.
Town came back with their own chances, though, and substitute Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro tried to squeeze the ball in at the near post on the left but Dunn turned it behind for a corner.
There was an even better save from Leutwiler in the Town goal as he somehow managed to punch over a close-range header from the U's Josh Coulson after a header back across goal from a corner.
At the other end, with 63 minutes on the clock, Grant lined-up a blaster with space on the edge of the Cambridge penalty area and Dunn had to tip the strike over with a spectacular one-handed save.
Cambridge had a great chance great to equalise in the 56th minutes on the right side of the penalty and Leutwiler had to tip the ball onto his near post.
Clark then tried his luck with a left-foot attempt from the edge of the box and U's 'keeper Dunn parried the ball away.
Town got the second period underway shooting towards the Salop Leisure Stand, and Collins had the chance to double the lead after being picked out by Bobby Grant once the midfielder had swivelled past his marker, but Collins mishit his shot.

There was also one last effort for Collins a minute before the interval as he tried a swerving shot from long range which Dunn had to get down to hold.
The referee decided that just a yellow card was the punishment it warranted.
And there was a big talking point just two minutes before the break as former Town man Matt Harrold elbowed Mark Ellis when challenging for an aerial ball.
As the half approached the interval, Robbie Simpson struck high and harmlessly over for Cambridge from nearly 30 yards out.
Defender Cameron Gayle also had to throw his body in to prevent a tap in for Cambridge from Ryan Donaldson's low cross on the right.
Slew then fired another long-range drive at Leutwiler, this time from the inside left, and the Town keeper had to get down to his near post to palm the ball away.
The U's looked to hit back a minute later and Shrews 'keeper Leutwiler stood tall to beat away a fierce strike from Jordan Slew on the edge of the penalty area.
However, in the same passage of play in the 16th minute, James Collins lifted a cross towards Mickey Demetriou at the far post and the defender cushioned a header down for Grant who arrived on the scene, with the midfielder firing down into the bottom left corner to give Town the lead.
Town were then denied by the crossbar a minute later as Barnett swivelled onto his left foot before firing a strike from the edge of the box which crashed back off the crossbar.
With 15 minutes on the clock, Ryan Woods tried to find his first goal of the season with a long-range drive from the left which Cambridge goalkeeper Chris Dunn held onto well.
At the other end, former Town loanee Nathaniel Mendez-Liang tried to sneak in a cross at the near post from the left in the sixth minute but it was too high for Jayson Leutwiler's goal.
Micky's side started on the front foot and caused early pressure in the opening minute, with Tyrone Barnett hooking a ball into the box before Jordan Clark eventually chipped over the crossbar.
Cambridge United kicked-off the game on a glorious afternoon in the sun at the Greenhous Meadow, with Town attacking the Pro-Vision CCTV Stand in the first half.

The Shrews also hit the woodwork twice on the afternoon, and Cambridge had chances of their own before substitute Kaikai fired into an empty net with a minute of the addded five at the end remaining.
On-loan midfielder Grant, who scored both goals in the 2-1 victory at Accrington Stanley on Tuesday night, struck in the first half to give Town the lead in the Sky Bet League 2 at the Greenhous Meadow.
Another Bobby Grant goal was not enough for Shrewsbury Town to claim all three points against Cambridge United as Sulley Kaikai scored a 94th-minute equaliser for the U's.
