Demetriou Joins United On Loan DealMickey Demetriou has today completed a loan move to join Cambridge United on loan until January.
The move gives Mickey the chance to get some first team games under his belt after having few opportunities so far this season for Town.
Manager Micky Mellon spoke over pre-season about how he thought the side needed a little bit more League 1 experience in certain areas of the squad. So far Mat Sadler has played on the left on defence and on Saturday with the move to 3-5-2 Junior Brown played as the left back.
Speaking to the press this morning Micky Mellon spoke about his reasoning behind Mickey’s loan move to Cambridge;”Micky Demetriou has gone out to Cambridge United on loan to January and I hope he does well.
“I just believed that, as everyone has seen now, that there is a huge step up in standards in league 1.
“I care about the players and when I looked at the situation this season I felt we needed to get more experience for this league.
“It has been a huge transformation in Mickey’s career to go into League 2 and to then step straight up to League 1 I felt was a big ask.
“I needed to try and get some consistency and experience in there and that was my decision and I spoke to him and told him my thoughts on that.
“I think he will hugely benefit from another season in League 2 where it is not as punishing as it is here where if you make an error you will be punished.”
Demetriou was a part of Town’s side which won promotion for League 1 and the Gaffer is hoping the loan will see him get some much needed games under his belt;”He needs to play games as he’s only had one season in League 2 and he needs to continue to play games.
“They only way you are going to continue to get better and continue learning is by playing first team games of football.
“We didn’t think that there would be enough first team football here for him in the foreseeable future so feel this is the best decision all round.”
