Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro post Bradford City

17 April 2016

Jean-Louis pleased with goal but not performance

Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro was pleased to score in the 1-1 draw against Bradford but he felt his performance could have been much better:
“When I heard the keeper say ‘keepers’ I knew the ball was for me because I knew no one was in the goal. I fought and I was the first to the ball and I was happy it went in. I am always happy to score but I am a bit disappointed with my performance because I know I can do better. But it is a good point and I scored so I feel a bit in-between because I know I can do better. I am happy to be back in the starting 11 but I am disappointed with my performance because I have done much better in the past. Today I think it was not my best game.”

The striker feels goalkeeper Jayson Leutwiler and his defence are essential to the team doing well:
“Big credit to Jayson and the defenders because they were unbelievable with blocks and saves. Jayson has improved every game since last year. He gets better and better every game and again today he was brilliant. He was a big part in getting the draw today. He has a lot of good games and makes lots of good saves, this year he has been very consistent. We didn’t play that well but we fought and we got a good result. They had a lot of corners but we defended quite well. We made one mistake but we went again to get a goal and we did it. The supporters played a part and we need them. They are very important to us.”

The 31-year-old feels Town are in a battle at the wrong end of the table but believes Shrewsbury can stay up:
“It is a good thing to be two points clear because we have everything in our hands but we need to make sure we keep the distance and pick up more points. We were nine points clear but we have been pulled back so quickly so we have to try to get every point possible because you never know what will happen. In this league it is tough and we can’t relax we have to take every point. We did that today with a point against a good team. This point was very important as is every point so now we have to keep our fate in our hands and get safe before the last game. I don’t know how many points we will need so we will just have to keep giving everything and try to win. Today was a good fight and we showed character despite it not being our best game.”

The Frenchman believes a win against Sheffield could set the club up for a strong finish in the league:
“I do well against Sheffield. Now we have to have a solid performance and a win. We had a good run and now we have to get back on track with a good result to get confidence and get going again. It is more than playing a team with nothing to play for. Sometimes it is harder playing a team with nothing to play for. They will be more relaxed and enjoy it and have nothing to lose. We have to be careful of every team because every team is good. Each game is very tight and a mistake can decide games. Doncaster were six points from relegation when we played them earlier and now they have dropped. Blackpool were in front of us but they have dropped too so in this league you never know.”
