Mat Sadler post Walsall

27 April 2016

Defender pleased with second half fight

Defender Mat Sadler’s recent return to the side has seen him put in some decent performances on the left of Town’s formation.
Against Walsall he put in another good performance and added a second half header that put Town right back into the game.
In the end despite a full hearted second half performance from the visitors it was Walsall who were the ones who took the 3 points.
After the game Mat spoke to the press to give his thoughts on the evenings game.
“I think without doubt our second half performance gave us heart and we really forced the issue”, said Mat.
“There was a chance after we had got it back to 1-0 and you’re thinking if that goes in then anything can happen.
“You saw with their second goal that they get a deflection and it goes in to make it 2-0, we get a deflection and goes into the keeper’s hands and that is the fine margins of footy.
“We are finishing the game angry with ourselves for the first half performance but all focused on what will be a barnstormer of a game on Saturday.
“That game is everything to us and we will look at that focused on the more positive second half performance this evening.”
After an early change in formation and personnel in the first half Town slowly started to get into the game as the half wore on.  Just before the half time break Walsall grabbed a second goal to make it more of a challenge for Town.
“The lads has run it across the pitch and it’s opened up for him, as you’ve seen he’s taken a shot and Jayson has said it’s taken a couple of ricochets and all I remember is it hitting me and turning in the other way.
“That’s footy and the small margins, they get a deflection and it goes in, we get one and it goes into the keeper’s arms.
“The more disappointing part is that we let him get across the pitch and get the shot in.
The second saw Town start with more purpose and attacking guile and this continue with the early introduction of Whalley and Cole.  The performance was much better and Mat hopes that it showed to the 696 travelling fans the fight in the squad.
“They did really well but as a team and a group we forced the issue more as the game went on.
“There were a lot of people who came down the M54 to support us tonight and we needed to show them some heart, passion and desire to get back into the football match,
“Although we didn’t get the point and get right back into the game I think people can see we gave it our best shot and worked our socks off in the second half.
“All focus now has to go onto Saturday’s game and getting the result that we want.”
Mat got onto the scoresheet with a well taken header in the second half but it’s not a goal that means much due to the result.
“To be honest I take no enjoyment in that as we didn’t get the second goal that we needed.
“I’m very much about the team so if we had got the second goal then great I would be happy, but as we didn’t it’s nothing and onto the next game.”
