Head to Head: Town v Fleetwood

2 December 2016

A look back on our previous encounters with Fleetwood Town

When Town welcome Fleetwood to the Greenhous Meadow on Saturday it will be only the fifth time the two clubs have met.

Town are currently winless against the Trawlermen, who have the historical edge in the fixture, having won two of the four encounters, with the other two games ending in draws.

Before the 2015/16 season the sides had never met, and their first match up came on October 6 2015 in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy. Fleetwood snatched a 2-1 victory with a 91st minute winner from Bobby Grant, after Ashley Hunter had previously cut out Junior Brown’s opener for Town.

The side’s next meeting came in the Boxing Day fixture of 2015. The League One match ended 1-1 after Fleetwood were again rescued by Ashley Hunter. With the forward scoring an 86th minute equaliser, after Town had led the game for 80 minutes thanks to Jordan Clarke’s strike in the sixth minute.

In the third match up of the 2015/16 season, Town travelled to Highbury in early February in search of revenge after two late goals had cost them in the previous meetings. But Town were unable to convert their chances, as the sides played out a goalless draw, and shared the points.

The most recent meeting between the two sides was just over a week ago and it was another unhappy result for Town. Fleetwood won the League One encounter 3-0 at Highbury after a brace from David Ball and a rare goal from Conor McLaughlin.

When Shrewsbury host Fleetwood on Saturday, not only will they be hoping to end their winless streak against the Trawlermen, but they will be hoping to secure a place in the FA Cup Third Round.
