Gaffer's thoughts after the weekend draw at Wolves

Town played their first competitive game of pre-season when they played out a 2-2 draw with Wolves at their training ground.

Town came back from being 2-0 down at the break to draw the game thanks to second half goals from Andy Mangan and Tyrone Barnett.

Manager Micky Mellon enjoyed seeing his team back in action and getting the chance to see the new signings in a Shrewsbury Town shirt.

“It was a worthwhile exercise as we went over there wanting to learn about the new group”, said Micky.

“We found out a lot of positives and a lot of good points that we can work on during the next few weeks.

“It will go a long way to helping to build the group as we look towards the first game of the season.

“The game was played at a high tempo against a good side who really tested us.”

Pre-season games are important to get the players match minutes under the belt but the competitive edge of trying to win a game is never far from the manager’s mind.

“Results always have relevance as you want to win every game that you take part in”, he said.

“In terms of performance as we well we have to be happy especially at the stage where we are and where we believe we need to get to.

“It was good that a lot of the players got some good match minutes as that is the important thing for these games.”

Town now look forward to another week of pre-season training before Saturday’s visit of Cardiff City to the Greenhous Meadow.

“We will build on that this week and use what we have learned and we will take that forward into the Cardiff game”, said Micky.

“We’ve got another tough week ahead of us in training before Saturday’s game.

“We’ll continue to build things as we progress through pre-season and plan for the MK Dons game.”
