Micky Mellon pre Wolves

8 July 2016

Gaffer’s thoughts before the first game of pre-season

Town make the short trip over to Wolves tomorrow for a behind closed doors training game with the Championship side.

It will be Micky Mellon and his coaches’ first chance to see the new look Shrewsbury Town in competitive action.

The game will be a practice match and the Town manager is expecting a good test and a good workout for this team.

“We will look it as a game that will help to improve the players fitness, like every manager will say”, said Micky.

“We haven’t done much in the way of preparation tactically for the game and we will set the team up to have a look at one of two things.

“It will give us an idea of what the players know already and we will then work from tomorrow on what they can get better at.

“It will be a great exercise for us against a really tough opposition.”

All available players are expected to travel and Micky is expecting everyone to get some game time.

“That’s what you try and do in these games, to give everyone some time on the pitch”, said the Town manager.

“Some can go a little bit longer than others due to the fitness levels but you try to get everyone involved if you can.

“It is the fair thing to do but of course we will have an eye on pushing a team closer to the first game of the season.”

The Sky Bet League 1 season kicks off on Saturday 6th August when MK Dons are the visitors to the Greenhous Meadow.  It’s just under a month away and the upcoming games will be used to mould the squad for that game.

“You know if that game was tonight you would have an idea of what the team would be”, added Micky.

“A lot of things will change over pre-season with form and maybe some injuries so you can’t make your mind up yet.

“There is still quite a long way to go yet before that first game of the league season.”
