"I like to try and play football but at the end of the day I know my job and if I can get a clean sheet rather than starting an attack that’s what makes me happy," he said.

"Hopefully I can bring a lot of clean sheets to the side and a lot of wins.

"I have played left back most my career apart from the last two seasons at Port Vale where I have gone in and it is probably my favourite position but I am happy to do a job anywhere across the back four."

McGivern admits he is happy to a job anywhere for Town having played either centre back or left back for most of his career.
"I am delighted to get signed and get everything over the line, and I am looking forward to the season ahead," McGivern told shrewsburytown.com.

"From playing here last year, I know the setup is very good and I got the phone call and spoke to the manager and everything he said sounded perfect to me.

"He told me he wanted me to be here and it was hard to say no really.

"A few clubs were interested in me but this one popped up and speaking to the manager and knowing the boys I knew this was the place for me.

"I know a few of the boys already here. I know Olly Lancashire who has just signed and Gary Deegen I have played with in the past as well as Olly, and I know Richie Wellens too from a loan spell in the past."

And he is now looking forward to the next chapter of his career.

McGivern, born in Northern Ireland, has represented his country at international level and made his Premier League debut for Manchester City in 2011.

The 26-year-old, who has spent the last two seasons at Port Vale, becomes manager Micky Mellon's fifth signing of the summer.

Shrewsbury Town is delighted to announce the signing of defender Ryan McGivern on a two-year deal.
