Dom into the Welsh U21 squad for UEFA qualifiers
Welsh U21 Manager Geraint Williams' has named his squad for the upcoming UEFA U21 Championships 2017 away qualifiers against Bulgaria (25 March) and Romania (29 March) and Dom Smith has been included. It’s a great reward for Dom who has made nearly 20 appearances for the first team this season and who signed a new two year deal on Tuesday night.
Wales are currently undefeated at the top of Group 5 and head into the two fixtures full of confidence having opened the campaign with a 3-1 victory over Bulgaria in Cardiff last March.
This will mean that Dom will miss the games at home to Port Vale and away to Walsall.
Town manager Micky Mellon thinks that it will be a great honour for Dom and will help continue his development as a player.
“It’s great for the club that we have players getting recognised at international level”, said Micky.
“It’s part of Dom’s development that he can go and play at those levels if he gets the opportunity.
“Things like this can only aid his development and it’s great to see him being called up by Wales.
“The flip side is that he will miss games for us but we have a squad that we say are here to play first team football so someone else will get the chance to step in.”
