Gaffer On Smith Signing

9 March 2016

MM delighted with new deal for Dom Smith

Micky Mellon was elated to have tied local boy Dom Smith down to a two year contract for the club:

“I am delighted that such a local young talent has signed for us. We want that connection with the local community and he thoroughly deserves his contract. He will have to work hard now to prove himself but we have seen his work this season and he definitely deserved the new contract.”

The 43-year-old believes Smith is evidence of the success of the club’s youth system:

“We are a football club that prides itself on youth development. We don’t need to talk about all the previous talent we have had but Dom is next in the line and he is flying the flag for our youth policy. He has been fantastic and we will keep pushing him to make him the best he can be.”

The Scotsman thought Smith put in a good performance against Coventry and believes he will continue to improve:

“He stepped up tonight. Connor Goldson did it in League 2 and Dom has done it in League 1. He is so desperate to learn and I am delighted the football club are going to have his services for the next couple of seasons. He is a terrific lad and he wants to do well for the town. He has to continue to improve but for a young local lad to give the performance he did tonight is fantastic for the football club.”
