Youngster signs new two year deal at Town

Dom Smith put pen to paper on a new two year deal with Shrewsbury Town this evening after the 2-1 win over Coventry City

The youngster was delighted to be given a two year contract at Shrewsbury, 13 years after joining the club as a seven year old:

“It is an honour to play for the club and I want to do it for as long as possible. I have come through the academy from the age of seven so to get into the first team and do everyone proud is fantastic.”

“The new contract is great and it gives me some stability but I want to keep going and keep proving myself. I hope I can score soon too because I am dying to do that! I have hit the bar a couple of times but hopefully in these next few years I will get plenty of goals.”

The defender spoke of his desire to follow in the footsteps of the previous talent that made its way through the Shrewsbury youth system, he also thanked the staff involved in his development:

“It just shows how good our academy structure is and how good players and professional football players are coming through our ranks. Players like Joe Hart and Ryan Woods have come through and I hope I can do the same. They all have their pictures up around the stadium and I hope I can have my own one at this club one day!”

“We have fantastic youth coaches here and I want to give them a huge thank you because they have let me prove how good I can play and they taught me what I have now to get in the first team.”

The Wales under-21 International felt his loan to Tamworth last season helped his development but feels he is ready now to compete in League 1:

“The loan at Tamworth helped a lot. I was only eighteen and I was thrown into first team football which made me learn fast. I feel like I have adjusted to League 1 now from being in the Conference North and I feel like I have handled it well and I feel good. You have to adapt to the situation wherever you are playing and I was lucky to be given an opportunity again tonight. I am a versatile player and I don’t care what position I am in as long as I play. Football is my life and I want to enjoy it as much as I can.”
