Wembley Awaits For Thomas Telford Girls

30 March 2016

Girls To Represent Shrewsbury Town At Wembley

“We’re delighted that our girls have made it through to the Kinder Cup Final at Wembley.

“It’s a massive achievement and it’s fantastic for all involved.

“Being a part of the Football League Trust we get the opportunity to enter in the Kinder Cup and Thomas Telford have represented us in this. We’re here to support them in any way we can.

“As part of the Community, we are here to help and support all schools in Shropshire and give people the chance to wear the club badge and give people, like these young girls, opportunities to play at places like Wembley.”

Shrewsbury Town in the Community Coach Pete Wilson says he is equally proud of what Thomas Telford have achieved adding:

“It’s been great (to represent Shrewsbury town),” added Ms Perks.

“They’ve been with us throughout all the rounds and supported us. They’re coming to Wembley and have come here to take a training session. They have offered us all their support so that we are fully prepared for the occasion and hopefully we’ll win down at Wembley.”

Sophie Bramford, who plays in an attacking midfield role for the Under-13 side said she cannot wait to get to Wembley and appreciates it’s an occasion not everyone can sample.

“I’m really looking forward to Wembley as it’s going to be a great experience and not many people get to go to Wembley,” she said.

“I’d like to thank all the coaches from Thomas Telford and all of the coaches from Shropshire and Shrewsbury Town in the Community – they’ve taken us to all the tournaments and offered us advice.”

Having then gone on to win the regionals they then qualified for the Northern Finals in Huddersfield, where they beat schools representing the likes of Blackburn Rovers, Derby County and Middlesbrough to set up a final showdown with their Southern opponents, Cambridge United.

They firstly played and won a local schools tournament at the Shrewsbury Sports Village to determine which school would go through the West Midlands regionals and represent Shrewsbury Town.

Thomas Telford had to manoeuvre themselves through three rounds before winning their place at Wembley Stadium.

“It’s been a really successful season so far with the girls’ football with all the ages, but particularly the under-13’s who have now qualified for the final at Wembley for the six-a-side Community Cup,” said Ms Perks.

“We won this competition to get to Wembley two years ago and narrowly lost in the final but it’s still a massive achievement for these girls to get there. Getting to Wembley is such an achievement, win or lose.

“I’m really pleased for the girls and hope they have a great time.”

Ms Perks, who also captains the Wolverhampton Wanderers ladies team, says it’s been a great season all round for Thomas Telford girls’ football, culminating in their upcoming trip to the capital.

P.E teacher Anna Perks’ side are representing Shrewsbury Town in the final of the Football League Kinder+Sport Girls Cup, which is held at Wembley Stadium on Sunday 5 April prior to the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final.

Shrewsbury Town in the Community put on a training session for Thomas Telford Girls U13s in preparation for their visit to Wembley in April.
