Abu Ogogo Pre Northampton Town

Skipper looks ahead to the first game of the season

4 August 2017

Shrewsbury Town skipper Abu Ogogo is glad that the waiting is finally over.

Town get their League One campaign underway against Northampton Town tomorrow afternoon.

It has been a hard and long pre-season campaign with Town winning four games against Championship opposition and Ogogo is ready for the talking to stop.

“Pre-season has felt very long”, Abu admitted.

“Especially when you are running around that pitch and you are tired, you are wishing pre-season to be over, but it’s got to be done and now the season is here, so it’s exciting.

“I always feel excited. Some of the young boys might feel a little bit nervous, but I think at times a little bit of nerves can be a good thing as well.”

Northampton have invested well over the summer and Ogogo is expecting a tough physical test against the Cobblers.

“I think they are a big side”, said Ogogo.

“They were quite direct last year, but in pre-season I think they’ve been trying to play out of the back, so we can expect a tough game.

“Set-pieces are going to be important. We need to be switched on because we don’t want to be giving away silly free-kicks, but we’ve got to play how we play and hopefully get three points.”

Town themselves have added 11 new faces the squad this summer and Ogogo has been impressed so far.

“Hopefully this year will be different to last”, said Abu.

“Every position has been improved. I think the Gaffer maybe wants to bring in one or two more, but in every position there’s been an improvement.

“Everyone’s made the new boys welcome. It’s a completely different squad compared with when I arrived, there’s only a couple of people left, but the boys are good and we are gelling nicely.”
