Coyne to wear 44

29 August 2017

Danny Coyne added to the squad as goalkeeping back-up

Goalkeeper Coach Danny Coyne has been given a squad number for Town’s upcoming fixtures against Coventry City and Gillingham.

Coyne turned 44 on Sunday and will wear the number 44 should he feature in the games.

His addition to the squad comes after Dean Henderson was called up for the England Under-21’s.

In his playing career, Coyne featured for Leicester City in the Premier league in the 2003/04 season. He also had spells at Burnley, Middlesbrough and Sheffield United making most of his appearances (181) for Grimsby Town.

Coyne also featured in 16 games for his national side Wales between 1995 and 2007.

Town boss Paul Hurst spoke about his possible inclusion last Thursday.

“It’s something that we will seriously have to have a chat about it”, said Paul.

“I’ve not been against going without a keeper on the bench in the past, but that’s more when it was 5 subs than 7.

“Shaun Rowley is out on loan currently; do I want to get him back for the sake of one game?

“We’ve also got young Cam (Cameron Gregory) who has been up to train with us a few times, we’ll see whether or not I feel it’s right for him.

“I’m sure if I say to Danny, look you’re on the bench then he’ll have to get changed!

“He hasn’t done it in a while, but in Portugal in fairness when Shaun did get injured, he stepped up and joined in with the training games and I have to say his form would suggest that he’s worthy of a contract!”
