Dean Henderson called up to the England Under-21 squad

Shrewsbury Town’s Goalkeeper Dean Henderson has been called up by England Under-21’s.

Henderson is on loan from Manchester United and has been called up for games against the Netherlands on Friday 1st September and Latvia four days later.

It means that Dean will miss the game against Gillingham on Saturday 2nd September, but Paul Hurst is pleased for him.

“It’s good news for Dean”, admitted Hurst.

“He was obviously part of the World Cup winning squad. I don’t think he played as much as he would have liked because Dean probably thinks he should be in the main team, but it’s great for him and hopefully he will get a call-up to the full squad eventually.

“I think it’s a great platform for him coming here and playing League One football. Hopefully, people will see a bit more of him in competitive first team games and hopefully it’s a slight reward in terms of how he’s started the season as well.”

With Henderson now missing for the Gillingham game, Hurst has more than enough faith in Craig MacGillivray to step in.

“Craig will come in,” said Paul.

“He was unlucky realistically not to start the season. He let one penalty in and one goal at Telford that went through someone’s legs.

“He certainly didn’t not make the starting line-up because of mistakes that he made, so I’m more than happy with Craig going in there.”
