Goalscorer praises the teams performance to earn the 3 points

Shrewsbury Town started their 2017/18 Sky Bet League One season with a win at home to Northampton Town.

Shrewsbury had been the better side over the 90 minutes but it took a strike from substitute Lenell John-Lewis in added time to give Town the 3 points.

Lenny had found space in the Cobblers box to get on the end of a low Alex Rodman cross and he kept his calm to guide the ball home and get Town off to a winning start.

“I think the lads worked really hard, today kept the ball well and passed it around well”, said Lenell.

“It wouldn’t have been a surprise to have gone in at half-time a goal up.

“The lads were fantastic today and I said that to every one of them as they came off the pitch.”

Town have shown some good form over the pre-season games but it was important to start the league season with a win.

“It’s nice to start with a win, we said in pre-season that we wanted to get into a winning habit and we got that with our games against the Championship sides”, said Lenell.

“It’s nice to carry that on now and start to look forward to trying to continue that.”

It is always important for strikers to get a goal early on the in the season and Lenny was pleased to get off the mark in the first game.

“It pleasing to get the goal and get that off your shoulders I can forget about getting off the mark now and just look forward to the next game”, said Lenell.

“Alex is pleasing on the eye to watch and he was on top of his game today and laid it on plate for me to score.”

Town now take a break from league action with a Carabao Cup trip to the City Ground to take on Nottingham Forest. It will be the first competitive game between the sides and a game Lenny is looking forward to.

“We have played fantastic today and I feel we can go into that game full of confidence”, said Lenell.

“I played there in the FA Cup when I was quite young and it is a lovely stadium so should be a good game.”
