Mat Sadler Post Nottingham Forest

Defender reflects on 2-1 defeat in the Carabao Cup

9 August 2017

Shrewsbury Town’s Club Captain Mat Sadler admitted that he was disappointed to be knocked out of the Carabao Cup.

Town put in a valiant performance, but were eventually beaten 2-1 by Championship side Nottingham Forest.

Mat was pleased with certain aspects of Town’s performance, but admitted that he never likes losing.

"I think we are disappointed with the goals we've conceded", Sadler told the Press.

"We've come into the game under no illusions that this will be a different game to League One, but that being said I thought we gave a good account of ourselves.

"It's frustrating because I think on another day we do the right things for their first goal and maybe we take a few of our chances.

"We then don't keep the backdoor shut, which gives us a mountain to climb, so it's disappointing. I think we did give a good account of ourselves, but you never like not winning."

Town had a couple of decent chances in the second half, including a late Alex Rodman header, but Sadler is now looking forward to getting back into League action.

"I think we are disappointed that we didn't work the ‘keeper as much as we should have done", said Mat.

"Maybe we waited for a half before we really got on the front foot again, because I thought second half we pressed them, harried and I think apart from one spell of possession it felt very comfortable.

"There's plenty of things to take away from the game that were good. We are under no illusions that the game on Saturday will be completely different from the game today, so we move on to what is now a very important second game of the season."

Over 800 travelling Salopians made the trip to the City Ground and Mat praised their commitment on a rain-soaked evening.

“In that corner is probably where the rain was worst on the pitch, so I can only imagine how bad it was for them in that corner”, Sadler continued.

We love having them behind us. Hopefully, with what the Gaffer’s doing, with what we are doing, they will continue to come in their numbers and with them right behind us, who knows what we can do.”
