Paul Hurst Post Wigan Athletic

26 December 2017

Shrewsbury Town boss Paul Hurst was proud of his players after they drew 0-0 with the League One leaders Wigan Athletic.

Town produced a fantastic hard working display as Wigan threw everything at the Town backline, but they couldn’t find a way through and Hurst was full of praise for his side.

“I think we’ve seen the team that will be champions”, Paul said of Wigan.

“They’ve got some very good players, very clever players, but I thought we had spells in the game as well.

“I know people will say that they hit the woodwork twice, but one was an absolute worldie and the other was a bit of fluke.

“I think we had chances ourselves. Alex has had one at the start of the second half and I thought we actually got on top for a spell.

“At the death I think they were probably coming on strong, but overall we’ve certainly played our part in what was an entertaining game.

“Would we have taken a point before we got here? I think we would have and to get a clean sheet again was good.”

The result means that Town have now taken four points off Wigan this season and Paul was pleased with that return.

“If someone says that then you happily take it”, said Hurst.

“First-half I just questioned whether we had the belief and that was the message before the game to because it’s one thing saying something but can you really have the belief to go out there and go toe to toe with them.

“In the second half I thought we did that and then there’s always times where you expect to come under pressure, but I thought we defended well.”

Jon Nolan went closest for Town and Hurst spoke about how he saw that chance.

“From where I am I haven’t got a clue in all honesty”, admitted Paul.

“I think a player ran across play, so I couldn’t really see what was happening and then I heard an ‘ooo’. In the end I think it was quite some distance wide but I couldn’t really tell.

“He had another chance in the first half when Bolts put in a good cross and it went behind everyone and Nolan was just stepping onto it, but they managed to put in a good tackle and block the shot.

“We had some moments ourselves against what is an excellent team, but we showed that we aren’t too bad a side as well.”
