Brian Caldwell on Sir Rod Stewart

CEO delighted by announcement of Sir Rod

Shrewsbury Town’s Chief Executive Brian Caldwell is delighted that Sir Rod Stewart will be visiting the Greenhous Meadow on the 7th June.

The people of Shropshire have been looking forward to a concert ever since the success of Elton John back in 2011.

Brian is pleased that Sir Rod has decided to come and play in Shrewsbury and believes it will be a big boost to the local economy.

“Since I came here a year ago a lot have people have said to me ‘Can we have a concert?’”, Caldwell told ShrewsWeb.

“I remember being on Radio Shropshire after two weeks in the post and somebody phoning up and asking me if I’d got a concert yet.

“Obviously there was great success with the Elton John concert and we were very keen to do something again, but we’ve only got a window of a certain number of weeks that we can do that and Rod Stewart works out well for everybody.

“He’s a showman. From talking to Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Kilmarnock who both had Rod Stewart concerts last years and both have talked very highly about the show that he puts on.

“I’ve seen the photos of Elton John and I think it will be great for not just Shrewsbury, but the whole of Shropshire, the local economy and hopefully people will realise this is something that Shrewsbury Town are bringing to the county.

“With potentially 20,000 people here for a Rod Stewart concert people will be coming from all over, hopefully stay in the town and spend money in the local economy. So, there’s not just a benefit to the football club, but also to the county and the council as well.”

The Greenhous Meadow is well positioned as a concert venue and Brian is hopeful that by making the Rod Stewart concert a success, more acts will follow in the future.

“We are actually very well positioned”, said Brian.

“We are only about an hour form Birmingham, an hour from Liverpool, an hour from Manchester, so for a concert venue this is actually a very good position.

“We’ve got the town itself with 75,000 people. We’ve got the county with 250,000 people and then we’ve got these big cities within an hour’s travelling commute as well, so I think we are in a really good position.

“Jayne Bebb has worked really hard to get the concert in the first place, but now the company are keen to do more potentially if we make a success of this one.

“The feeling is we can 20,000 people here, so hopefully it is well received and we get a good response and it’s a sell-out.”
