A quick look back at what happened in years gone by

Club Statistician Kevin Davies has had a look through the archives and found some of the stories which have made the headlines between the 23rd and 29th of January.

23.01.1982. Town earnt themselves a FA Cup third round tie at home to First Division Ipswich after beating Burnley.

The victory came courtesy of a second half strike from Chic Bates, as Town overcame third division Burnley 1-0 at the Gay Meadow.

24.01.1953- Town lost their 120th Football League match to Norwich. An Adam McCulloch goal was all Town had to take from Carrow Road as they went down 2-1.

25.01.1973- Town bought winger Geoff Morris from Walsall in this week for £6,000 and George Andrews.

Morris went on to make 82 Town appearances in all competitions over three seasons scoring 10 goals.

26.01.2013- Town fail to score for only the fourth time in their history on this date as they draw 0-0 at home to Bury.

The season ended in relegation for Bury whilst Town maintained their League One status, finishing in 16th.

27.01.1979- Town feature prominently on Match of the Day as they dispatch Malcolm Allison’s top-flight Manchester City in the FA Cup fourth round.

Town beat City 2-0 as over 14,000 packed into the Gay Meadow to see Maguire and Chapman see Town home.

28.01.1888- Town play their second home friendly against local rivals Market Drayton in the space of three weeks.

Town won the first tie 1-0, but run out 7-1 winners on this day.
