New Academy coach arrives

Alex Ramsay to take on two roles within the Academy

Shrewsbury Town’s Academy staff numbers have been bolstered once more with the appointment of Alex Ramsay.

Ramsay will take over from Callum McKenzie as the Lead Development Phase Coach and will also coach the Under-18s goalkeepers.

Alex comes with a wealth of experience having most recently been working at Swansea City as the Under-21s Goalkeeper Coach and is looking forward to working at Shrewsbury.

“I’ve known AJ (Andy Jones) for a few years now, so when I had the opportunity to come in it was something I was really looking forward to do”, Alex told ShrewsWeb.

“I’m going to be coming in as the Under-18 Goalkeeper Coach, alongside a Lead Youth Development Phase role which will entail me looking after under-12s to under-16s.

It’s nice to be able to do two roles. It will be a great experience working with the Under-18 goalkeepers and also a change in the evening with working with the outdoor players as well.”

Alex had previously worked at Town on a part time basis before joining Swansea and he is hopeful of bringing his Premier League experiences to Shrewsbury.

“I’m actually from Oswestry, so I worked part-time for the club about three and a half years ago”, Ramsay said.

“I’ve then been working at Swansea City Football Club for the last three and a half years as the under-21 Goalkeeper Coach, but once I heard of the interest from Shrewsbury it wasn’t an opportunity I could turn down.

“I was very fortunate in the role I had at Swansea and the opportunities I got given, so I feel like I can definitely pass on some of the experiences I learnt from Swansea and hopefully pass them onto the players.”

Alex is well aware of Town’s success in producing goalkeepers over the years and he is hopeful of working closely with Danny Coyne to help produce more in the future.

“You look at some of the young boys in the Academy now and they’ve got big prospects”, said Alex.

“It’s exciting times and I’m very much looking forward to working with the goalkeepers throughout the age groups.

“I’ve been working with Cameron Gregory and Jack Atkinson for about three or four weeks and they are very exciting and hopefully they will have the opportunities to work with Coyney a little bit.”
