Joe Riley and Tyler Roberts help with reading at Greenacres Primary School

Greenacres Primary school welcomed Joe Riley, Tyler Roberts and Shrewsbury Town in the Community recently, to see how they are getting on in our Reading the Game programme.

Reading The Game is a programme that all schools in Shropshire can get involved in, where we work with you to inspire pupils to read more, and at the same time improve their writing and P.E skills.

Joe and Tyler went to see how pupils were getting on, answering many questions from the excited children before heading down into the ‘Dragon’s Lair’.

Designed as a quiet corner for pupil’s to read, the Town players were read to by the class before signing each of their Shrewsbury Town workbooks, provided by us for the programme.

Joe enjoyed his afternoon at the school, and said: “I like meeting different kinds of people and different kinds of kids, I obviously want to give something back to the community.

“This club is really big on it, and I think every club around England should be big on it as well.

“It’s massive, the community side of Shrewsbury, I think it will be reaping the benefits of it.

“I’ve done bits at Bolton and Bury, but like I say the work that is done here is really good.”

Town players frequently get involved in finding out what programmes we deliver in schools, and Joe recognises the benefits of doing something that he never got to experience.

“No we didn’t,” he said when asked whether he got to see many players whilst he was in school. “I do remember meeting David Beckham and Ryan Giggs, which I can imagine is pretty different to meeting me!

“But you can see as soon as you walk through the door there’s a smile on their face, so to give something back and see that, it’s great.”
