Thomas Telford Girls set to represent Town at Wembley

Shrewsbury Town will be represented by Thomas Telford School at Wembley next week, at the Kinder + Sport Girls Cup final.

Over 6000 girls competed in the u13 six a side competition this year, and Thomas Telford have beaten off the likes of Barnsley, Peterborough and Blackburn Rovers to book their place against Bristol City (Gordano High School) in next Sunday’s final.

The team will travel down to London next Saturday and stay overnight, before enjoying a tour around Wembley. Their final follows, and will take place prior to the final of this year’s Checkatrade Trophy on 2nd April.

They head there looking to retain their trophy after coming out on top last year, beating Cambridge United at the home of British football.

In preparation the team was invited to Greenhous Meadow to have a training session put on by Shrewsbury Town in the Community, where they were joined by former Thomas Telford students turned Town players Shaun Rowley, Ryan Barnett and Kaiman Anderson.

They then had a pep talk from Town boss Paul Hurst, who offered some words of wisdom before the team head for London.

Speaking of their prospects, Paul said: “It sounds like they’ve had quite a bit of hard work to get to Wembley for this game, but they’re going back to retain the trophy!

“It will be a fantastic day out for them, going the day before as well, for some of the girls its the second time they’ve been, three of them played last year.

“They’re even luckier to get there again, and I’m sure their first experience will help them.

“I just said to try and not to be too nervous about it, try to get to bed early the night before and get some sleep, I can imagine there’ll be a lot of excitement flying around and then a few nerves the next day.

“But just enjoy it and try to remember as much of the day as possible, for a lot of them you imagine its the only time they’re going to do it.

“Try to make a good memory, and enjoy the day.”
