After an up and down August Town travelled to Oldham for their first game of September. The game was a ding-dong battle as Latics took the lead before Junior Brown’s header game put Town level before the break. Ivan Toney scored his first Town goal from the penalty spot after half-time and Joe Riley then scored a screamer, reminiscent of the goal he scored against Town for Bury a couple of season’s earlier, to put Shrewsbury 3-1 up. Oldham then went down to 10-men, but still caused Town problems as Lee Erwin’s goal meant that the final 10 minutes would be a nervy affair, but Town held on for the win.
That victory would be the last time Micky Mellon would taste success as Town boss, the rest of September proved a difficult time for Town as ill-discipline cost them on more than one occasion. Town travelled back to the North-West next time out as they faced Bury. It was a fiery encounter as both sides saw red and a mass skirmish ensued in the tunnel as the players made their way off at half time. James Vaughan was shown red for the hosts after scuffling with Adam El-Abd and then the Town captain was sent for an early bath early in the second half after receiving a second yellow card for a tackle on Danny Mayor. With both sides down to 10 men the game finally saw some goals as Mayor gave Bury the lead before Ivan Toney equalised, but it would be Bury that would have the final word as Mayor scored again in the 91st minute.
