Caldwell on the start to the season

9 November 2017

CEO delighted by the opening few months of the 2017/18 season

Shrewsbury Town Chief Executive Brian Caldwell has praised Paul Hurst, his staff and the players for their fantastic start to the 2017/18 season.

Town currently sit top of Sky Bet League One having won 11 and lost just one of their opening 16 league fixtures.

That defeat came in their last League One match against Peterborough United and brought to an end Town’s best unbeaten start to an EFL season.

Brian has been delighted by how the season has gone so far and wanted to reflect on the achievement.

“I think we need to sit back and reflect on what a fantastic achievement it was”, Caldwell told ShrewsWeb.

“Even to lose 1-0 at Peterborough is no embarrassment because at the end of the day they are a good side and they have started the season extremely well.

“I think we all realise how tough every game in this league is, so for us to go 15 games unbeaten was just quite incredible from everyone’s point of view and it’s now about how they react to that.

“It’s a shame that the game is off this weekend against Charlton, but it will be an interesting one when we return to action next week.”

Plans are already starting to take shape for the January transfer window, but Caldwell confirmed that keeping the squad together would be the main priority.

“I believe in small steps”, said Brian.

“All we are looking at now is what the next game is and we will take it from there. Paul’s obviously looking ahead to the January window and I know he’s had conversations with myself and the Chairman with regard to that.

“We’ve got to be aware of what could potentially happen in January because we’ve got some loans that potentially could be recalled at any time, but we are hopeful that we can keep the squad together and we can continue the good form we’ve had in the last 15 or 16 games.”
